I’ve been sailing dinghies for 5 years since my friends and family got me into it and I currently own a Laser 2, but she hasn’t been named yet! I sail to have fun and I love that it has allowed me to meet so many new people.
My best memory sailing was when my friend and I competed in our very first race, we were easily the least skilled sailors in the race and the conditions were not favourable (by not favourable I mean there was almost no wind, barely even a ripple on the surface). After a very slow start and some decent mark roundings, somehow we ended the race in third place. That third place “win” is what inspired me to continue with sailing and has pushed me to take the sailing instructor courses so I can help someone else get inspired.
The best piece of advice I’ve received was from my grandfather, who is an avid sailor, he told me “Don’t be afraid of trying new things while sailing because the worst thing that can happen is getting soaked.”
