My coach is Sarah Bethune. She has coached me for the past 5 years, and this year she was my head coach during my first year of coaching. My summer began really rockily as I originally hadn’t planned to apply for the instructor job at my club. I thought there was only one position available for the summer and I knew that 3 more experienced sailors were going up against me. However, I did end up applying and all four of us got hired. This led to some difficulties for me because I didn’t have my fundamental training… Anyway long story short I had to take the last technical clinic available before the season, and it was right in the middle of exams and I was rusty, so I, unfortunately, didn’t pass it.
I was so upset I thought I was going to lose my dream job. But Sarah called me and told me we were going to figure it out. She took me out sailing as much as she could before the season started and organized an LF to come and certify me afterwards. She was a great coach when I was a jr sailor, but in helping me to become a coach she went above and beyond. She is one of the nicest, funniest people I’ve ever met and she truly loves sailing and will do anything to help get people involved in it as much as she can.
